Alabama still a strong No. 1, Oregon slips past LSU in poll

New York, NY –  Alabama remained a near-unanimous choice as the nation’s top team while Oregon surpassed LSU in the latest Associated Press college football poll.

The Crimson Tide, after a 40-7 rout of overmatched Florida Atlantic, received
all but one of the 60 first-place votes and a total of 1,499 points from a
nationwide media panel.

Oregon and LSU swapped places. The Ducks moved up to second after a 49-0
throttling of then-No. 22 Arizona, while the Tigers dropped to third following
a 12-10 escape at Auburn. LSU still garnered one first-place vote, losing one
from last week.

Florida State and Georgia remained fourth and fifth, respectively, while South
Carolina, Kansas State, Stanford, West Virginia and Notre Dame completed this
week’s top 10. Kansas State vaulted eight places from 15th after a surprising
24-19 victory at Oklahoma. The Sooners tumbled 10 places to 16th.

The second 10 consists of Florida, Texas, Southern California, Ohio State,
TCU, Oklahoma, Clemson, Oregon State, Louisville and Michigan State. Oregon
State moved into the rankings for the first time this season after a 27-20 win
at UCLA. The Bruins were 19th and dropped out of the poll after the loss.

Mississippi State, Nebraska, Rutgers, Boise State and Baylor are the last five
teams ranked this week. Rutgers, on the heels of a stunning 35-26 win at
Arkansas, and Baylor are newcomers. Baylor outlasted Louisiana-Monroe on
Friday, 47-42.

In addition to UCLA, Arizona fell out of the poll after its humbling loss in
Eugene and Michigan tumbled out from 18th after a 13-6 loss at Notre Dame
dropped the Wolverines to 2-2.

Next week’s schedule features just two matchups of ranked teams, as Baylor
visits West Virginia and Michigan State hosts Ohio State in the Big Ten opener
for both schools.
