Rio Tinto to cut coal mining jobs

Rio Tinto is slicing jobs during a Coal Allied Industries section as it struggles with a high dump in spark prices and a high Australian dollar.

Australia, a world’s second largest exporter of thermal spark used for energy generation, has seen spark prices tumble over 20 per cent to underneath $US90 per tonne amid a tellurian supply bolt and reduced Chinese direct for fuel.

Coal Allied produces thermal spark in NSW’s Hunter Valley segment where other miners, such as Xstrata, have also changed to cut jobs in an bid to revoke costs.

“We are operative to urge the competitiveness by actively seeking ways to revoke costs opposite the business, that unfortunately means some roles will no longer be required,” Rio Tinto said.
