Gone too soon … little Elijah Slavkovic.

NEW systems for treating infants with serious, unexplained infections will be rolled out statewide in the wake of Elijah Slavkovic’s death, a coroner heard yesterday.
An inquest into the four-month-old’s death was adjourned until April to wait for the results of a pilot program for dealing with children showing signs of sepsis – a potentially lethal response to infection.
The scheme would later be introduced in NSW hospitals.
Draft guidelines include the use of antibiotics within the first hour for any child with key symptoms, such as a fever above 38.5C.
Elijah’s temperature was 39.1C when he arrived at Bega Hospital in April 2009 but he waited nearly four hours under observation before he was given antibiotics, the inquest previously heard.
He died in June from kidney failure after contracting bacterial meningitis while holidaying on the south coast.

After the inquest yesterday, mother Sandra Bernobic said she was happy to wait six months if it meant Elijah’s death would led to meaningful change in the health system.
