Why are China and Japan sealed in a moving face-off, shocking a universe and inflicting estimable mercantile pain on themselves, over a garland of little void islands in a East China Sea?

Nationalist politics and chronological resentments figure heavily in a territorial dispute, as do fish. But there’s another manly ingredient: energy.
