The Canberra Raiders insist halfback Sam Williams remains in the club’s long-term plans and won’t be released to take over from Scott Prince at the Gold Coast Titans.

Prince left the Titans yesterday to sign a two-year deal with the Brisbane Broncos, raising speculation Gold Coast was poised to chase Williams as a potential replacement.

A star for the Raiders in this year’s NRL finals series, Williams remains contracted to Canberra until the end of next year.

Raiders chief executive Don Furner said the Raiders did not intend to initiate extension talks with Williams until the NRL season kicks off, but Furner said the 21-year-old wasn’t going anywhere.

”Sam’s got a big future at this club and we won’t be letting him go,” Furner said. ”Obviously there’s always speculation about good young players, but he’s in our long-term plans.”

Prince’s move to Brisbane was so unexpected that coach Anthony Griffin has admitted the Broncos halves would be ”uncomfortable” about the former Test halfback joining the club, while the Titans don’t have a back-up plan to replace him.

When Gold Coast officials met Prince and his financial adviser on October 8, they thought their foundation captain may opt to retire at the end of next season after being told they were not going to take up an option on his services for 2014.

Instead, Prince decided to test the waters in Super League and after he was offered a three-year deal worth more than $1 million by Hull, the Titans felt they could not turn down his request for an immediate release.

But Prince rejected the deal with Hull on Tuesday night and signed a two-year contract with the Broncos.

Even Griffin said he needed some convincing before agreeing to sign Prince, who will turn 33 next season and is expected to celebrate his 300th first grade game.
