Catalonia's separatists make gains in election

BARCELONA—Separatists in Spain's Catalonia won informal elections on Sunday though unsuccessful to get a resounding charge for a referendum on independence, that had threatened to raise domestic doubt on tip of Spain's mercantile woes.

Catalan President Artur Mas, who has implemented unpopular spending cuts, had called an early choosing to exam support for his new expostulate for autonomy for Catalonia, a rich though financially uneasy segment in northeastern Spain.

Voters undone with a mercantile predicament and a Spanish taxation system, that they explain is astray to Catalonia, handed roughly two-thirds of a 135-seat internal council to 4 opposite separatist parties that all wish to reason a referendum on secession from Spain.

But they punished a categorical separatist group, Mas's Convergence and Union alliance, or CiU, slicing behind the seats to 50 from 62.
