A man in a suspected stolen truck has died after being shot by police in inner Sydney and two passers-by have been injured.

The man was shot on Regent Street, Redfern, about 11.40am (AEDT) on Friday.

Officers and paramedics gave him CPR but he was pronounced dead at the scene, behind the local police station.

Two people apparently injured when the truck crashed were being treated for minor injuries, said a spokesman from Ambulance NSW.

A witness called Marie said she was walking across the street into a clothing shop when she heard bangs, and about five minutes later she saw the truck slam into a wall.

“We saw the truck lose control and bang into the rail,” Marie told AAP.

“At the same time, police were running and they took their guns out, and we saw them shooting.”

It is understood the truck may have been stolen and police were pursuing it for some time before the fatal shooting.

A tobacconist said he heard three shots and came running outside.

“I saw three or four police (officers) around the truck,” he told AAP.

No officers were injured.

In a statement on Friday afternoon, police said a critical incident investigation team made up of officers from the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad would investigate the circumstances.

Officers from the Professional Standards Command will oversee the investigation.

The coroner will determine the cause of death and make any findings about the events leading to the man’s death, the statement said.

Club Redfern manager Anthony MacAlpine told AAP he heard the gunshots.

“I heard glass breaking and then heard loud bangs,” he said.

“I think it was three or four (bangs).”

Police have blocked the street behind the station, where debris from the incident can still be seen.

Shattered glass from a downed street light is strewn across the ten-metre-wide road.

At least six police officers are guarding the site, and Fire and Rescue NSW are at the scene.

The area has been sealed off, and Redfern and Regent Streets closed to traffic.

A shopkeeper told the Seven Network he heard three or four gunshots, walked out the front of his store and saw four or five officers pointing their guns at the truck.

“He shot two shots at the guy in the truck, and now the guy in the truck is dead,” one witness to the incident told Seven.

Another said: “It scared the bejesus out of me, I’m still shaking.”

Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward.
