X Factor bosses are stepping up security around the remaining contestants after Union J heart-throb George Shelley's laptop was stolen.

The 19-year-old star's computer went from his suite at the Corinthia Hotel, London.

He told hotel bosses, who traced the thief and returned the laptop within 24 hours.

A source said: "George knew he had left his laptop in his room, so he didn't understand how it could have been stolen.

"He complained to the hotel's security immediately and within 24 hours, they managed to locate it and find the perpetrator.

"The matter was dealt with, but now George is worried that the thief had time to access his private photos, emails and documents.

"It is a worry he feels he does not need so close to the semi-finals."

Show bosses have vowed to keep a closer eye on finalists to ensure they do not become targets for thieves desperate to cash in on their fame.

"This cannot be allowed to happen again," the insider adds. "The safety and wellbeing of the contestants is a top priority for the X Factor bosses.

"They do not want anyone feeling under threat, so they've promised to up the levels of security to stop anything like this happening again."

In previous years, contestants have stayed in one house together close to the Fountain studios in Wembley.

However, this year the finalists have stayed at the Corinthia hotel in London's Whitehall since the beginning of the live shows last month.

A spokesman for the hotel said: "A hotel guest recently reported the loss of a personal laptop.

“Following a thorough investigation, the hotel security team quickly identified the responsible party.

“The laptop was returned to the guest within 24 hours.

"The hotel exercises a zero tolerance policy for rare incidents such as this, and has apologised for the inconvenience this must have caused."
