Stampede at New Year's Celebration Kills Dozens in Ivory Coast

The throng of thousands was withdrawal a sprawling track in a downtown Plateau area after a final fireworks had signaled a new year when panic struck. In a crush, dozens were trampled underfoot, officials in Abidjan pronounced Tuesday.

Many were pushed into a tiny gully adjoining a Houphouët-Boigny track on a Boulevard de la République, in a heart of a city's compress executive business district, afterwards dejected as a panicked throng surged over them.

Children seemed to be among a harmed and dead: a state radio station, RTI, showed images of bleeding children in one of a city's hospitals, as good as profound women stretched on cots.
