John E. Karlin, Who Led the Way to All-Digit Dialing, Dies at 94

And when, not prolonged afterward, a dial gave approach to pull buttons, new questions arose: turn buttons, or square? How large should they be? Most crucially, how should they be arrayed? In a circle? A rectangle? An arc?

For decades after World War II, these questions were complicated by a organisation of amicable scientists and engineers in New Jersey led by one man, a Bell Labs industrial clergyman named John E. Karlin.

By all accounts a medium male notwithstanding his multi-coloured accomplishments (he had a doctorate in mathematical psychology, was lerned in electrical engineering and had been a veteran violinist), Mr. Karlin, who died on Jan. 28, during 94, was probably different to a ubiquitous public.
