HAVANA (AP) — Havana’s Roman Catholic principal says Pope Francis done a clever critique of a church usually hours before he was comparison as a new pontiff.
Cardinal Jaime Ortega says then-Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio called for a Vatican to emerge from self-absorption and what he called “theological narcissism.”
He urged a church to refocus a appetite on a “peripheries,” not usually geographical though existential: sin, suffering, misapplication and ignorance.
Bergoglio’s comments were done to a College of Cardinals as it met in a conference to select a new pope.
Ortega’s comment was published Tuesday in Cuban Catholic repository “Palabra Nueva.”
Bergoglio was named pontiff Mar 13 and subsequently chose Francis as his pope name.
