7:48pmScott Spits:
TEA.
A tremendous session by India. After slow going in the morning, they put on 106 runs in the middle session without losing a wicket. The partnership is worth 143 runs with Vijay and Pujara taking India to a more-than-solid position in the latter stages on day two. The match can turn in moments, of course, but the odds are against Australia. India 1-160, 63 overs. Vijay *73, Pujara *73

7:41pm: We’ve got a bowling change with Siddle replacing Maxwell. It’s getting desperate for Michael Clarke now. You get an inkling he might throw an over to Dave Warner before the tea break. For mine, it would be well worth the gamble. Nothing to lose. Breakthrough desperately required.

7:33pm: Doherty bowls his fifth maiden. He has been nothing if not economical with 0-29 with 15 overs. Vijay and Pujara are basically going run-for-run with both batsmen in the 60s. The difference being that the opener has faced nearly 200 deliveries. India 1-148, 60 overs. Vijay *67, Pujara *69

7:23pm: India is poised to bring up at least 100 runs for the session. In retrospect the hosts have done beautifully today by, piece by piece, taking the match away from Australia. The Aussies drastically need a wicket. This is the stage where Australia’s spin attack (Doherty Maxwell) will come severe scrutiny. India 1-140, 57 overs

7:20pm:

Poll: Did Michael Clarke do the right thing by declaring at 9-237?

7:14pm: Another good over to India as Vijay takes two boundaries from Maxwell. The opener is improving his scoring rate by the minute. The deficit is soon to be sub-100. India 1-133, 58 overs. Vijay *63, Pujara *58

7:09pm: Pujara drives a boundary. Maxwell tossed one up outside off and the batsman pierced the gap between point and extra cover. In the one instant the Indian No.3 brings up his 50 and the 100-run stand for the second wicket. India 1-120, 50.2 overs

7:02pm: This is fast becoming a defining session in this series. Maxwell has finally been brought on. The Indians don’t look like getting out and the partnership is closing in on the 100-run mark. India 1-116, 50 overs. Vijay *55, Pujara *49

6:42pm:DRINKS. We’re midway through the second session and India is cruising nicely. Pujara (41 not out) is not that far off from joining Vijay with a half-century. The deficit has been cut to 131 runs with nine wickets in hand. That’s a gap that should be bridged comfortably by the end of the day. India 1-106, 44 overs. Vijay *53, Pujara *41

6:35pm: There’s India’s 100! The run-rate has soared to 2.45 runs per over! Vijay has his half-century, too, amassed from nearly 150 deliveries. Still no sign of Maxwell warming up …. India 1-103, 42 overs

6:20pm: The pendulum is definitely swinging in India’s direction now. Such are the fluctuations of Test cricket. A quick wicket or two would rapidly swing it back in Australia’s favour. The hosts have already put on 30 runs since lunch after managing just 49 runs in a lacklustre opening session. Pujara and Vijay can both contemplate half centuries. One more question: When will Glenn Maxwell get a bowl? India 1-84, 38 overs

6:06pm: India improves its run-rate beyond two runs per over. And the 50-run partnership is brought up between Pujara and Vijay. The latest over from Pattinson is expensive, featuring three boundaries as Pujara gets his eye in. The pattern has changed. India 1-76, 35 overs. Vijay *36, Pujara *30

5:47pm: Pattinson has the first over after lunch and India manages to pick up four runs from it. Plenty of banter during the break whether it was a case of ‘India’s patience’ winning over ‘Australia getting on top’ in the first session. Regardless, it will be fascinating to see how the hosts try to improve their scoring rate after the break.

5:09pm:LUNCH. A session that posed numerous questions comes to an end. India’s run-rate is just 1.8 runs per over as the hosts progress to 1-54 from 30 overs. That equates top 49 runs from 27 overs during the first session on day two. Don’t forget that Siddle snared the early breakthrough, removing Sehwag (6) caught behind in the eighth over of the innings. India 1-54, 30 overs. Vijay *29, Pujara *15

5:04pm: Runs are flowing slightly more freely now. Vijay gets a freebie. Pattinson dishes up a swinging full toss outside off stump and the batsman caresses the ball through cover to the boundary. The shot brings up India’s 50. India 1-53, 28.5 overs

4:58pm: Doherty’s first four overs go for 12 runs. Vijay has taken his time getting to his quarter-century (96 balls). We’re only a few minutes away from lunch. Australia has owned this session, taking an important early wicket and keeping India to modest scoring.

4:37pm: Clarke brings on Doherty for his first overs in Test cricket in ….. a long while. The recalled spinner gets a chance on the deck before Maxwell. The pressure is rising on India. They’ve managed just 1-35 from 20 overs this session. India 1-40, 23 overs

4:21pm: India may have started the day with some rapid scoring, but it has slowed to a trickle. Henriques has 0-1 from four overs! The overall run-rate is less than two runs per over. Pattinson is also economical with 0-11 off seven overs. India 1-34, 19 overs

4:02pm: A maiden over to Siddle. Good solid bowling. Siddle has 1-20 from eight overs. We’ll now have a drinks break. India 1-31, 16 overs. Vijay 17*

4:00pm: There’s still plenty of discussion around about Australia’s surprise decision to declare at 9-237 before stumps. Certainly it caught most observers off guard. Here’s a stat to get you going – it was the third time in the history of Test cricket for a team to declare on the first day. Can anyone think of the other cases?

3:46pm: Australia makes a bowling change, bringing on Henriques to replace Pattinson. There may even yet be a double change … Maxwell waiting in the wings. I’m getting the distinct feeling we’ll have a good idea by the end of the day whether Australia is set to lose this series 3-0 or, heaven forbid, a 4-0 whitewash. The selectors have made a big call by dropping Nathan Lyon, turning their new spin hopes of Doherty and Maxwell. India 1-28, 12 overs

3:32pm: A boundary to the new batsman Cheteshwar Pujara. He gets a good leg side gift from Siddle and puts it away to the rope in front of square leg. Not even a desperate dive from Maxwell could stop the four runs. India scoring freely early on day two. India 1-25, 9.1 overs

3:26pm:WICKET! A big breakthrough for Australia. Siddle gets Sehwag out cheaply, the opener nudging a delivery to Wade behind the stumps. Again Sehwag gets out while playing defensively. Amazingly, Siddle was a little half-hearted in his celebration … the knick was that obvious he didn’t even need to appeal. India 1-17

3:09pm: Vijay cuts Pattinson fiercely over the slips. That’s an attacking shot. The big quick can only show his frustration as the ball comfortably goes over the slips cordon. India 0-11, 4.3 overs

3:02pm: We’re underway. Siddle has the first over of the day. Key question …. when will Clarke turn to spinners Xavier Clarke or Glenn Maxwell?

2:39pm: Hello and welcome to our coverage of the second day’s play between India and Australia in Hyderabad. The hosts owned the opening day of the second Test, taking Australia to 9-237 before a surprise early declaration from Michael Clarke. India safely negotiated three overs before stumps to reach 0-5.
