Will the Archibald Prize break with tradition this year? Could the Packing Room prize winner take out the big prize as well?

Mathew Lynn’s portrait of Tara Moss won over the packers this year and it’s become a running joke that to win that prize puts the mocca on taking out the big one.

Armidale artists Barry McCann says he’d love to see that change.

He himself has an entry in this years awards, a painting of Australian actress Isabel Lucas. He has also painted Ita Buttrose, Richard Roxborough and Po from Po’s Kitchen. But just because you enter doesn’t mean you get hung. That says Barry is truly another thrill, and has happened just once, in 2008 with his painting of Maggie Beer and Simon Bryant.

While this years Archibald winner won’t be announced until March 22nd, people in the Armidale district can get in the mood with an exhibition of painting from last year opening at NERAM.

Barry can hardly contain his excitement speaking with Kelly Fuller on the Morning Show.
