Shorter shifts for medical interns may not mean fewer mistakes

Cutting hours for sanatorium interns might not lead to fewer mistakes after all.

A standard call day for first-year residents — famous as interns — lasted 36 hours before 2003, and 30 hours until 2011. Regulations now extent first-year trainees during training hospitals to 16-hour shifts in sequence to give them a break. However, dual new studies in JAMA Internal Medicine on Mar 25 uncover that reduction time during a sanatorium doesn’t indispensably meant fewer errors.
