Friday's meeting at the White House between President Barack Obama and congressional leaders has been described as a last chance to keep tax increases for all Americans and big government spending cuts from taking effect next Tuesday. But there has been no sign that a deal is in sight.
Obama meets with Republicans John Boehner, the speaker of the House of Representatives, and Mitch McConnell, the Senate minority leader, as well as Democrats Harry Reid, the Senate majority leader and House minority Leader Nancy Pelosi.
On the Senate floor Thursday, both Reid and McConnell were pessimistic that a deal could be reached to steer away from the so-called "fiscal cliff."
"I do not know, timewise, how it can happen now," said Reid.
"Republicans are not about to write a blank check for anything
